England’s favourite Palestinian

Here’s something they don’t teach at school: England’s patron saint never set foot in England. St George was born in the Eastern Roman Empire — his mother from Lydda, in what is now Palestine — and died a martyr’s death there too.

He never slew a dragon and never visited these shores. But somewhere along the way, England claimed him as its own. He was Palestinian. He always was.
