Indeed, some people who joined us last summer were so moved and fired up by what they saw last year that they decided to come back! Here, Garth Hewitt offers some thoughts and stories from the trip. read more…4 August 2005 We have recently received a circular newsletter from Dalia Landau at Open House, in which she reflects on the various events of commemoration which take place in Israel during May, and how these affect the life and work of Open House. Such discussions only heighten the confusion and the myths that surround him. These are not so much about his killing of dragons, as about St George’s crusading image, and whether he is offensive to Muslims and other faith communities. Having recently been made a Canon of the Cathedral of St George the Martyr in Jerusalem, I think it is incumbent on me to speak up in St George’s defence. There is often a confusion as to exactly who is our patron saint. The Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir Ali, pointed out in a letter to The Guardian last year: read more… 23 April 2004 At this time, the news from our partners in Israel and Palestine continues to be potentially disheartening. a bit ahead of ourselves), and this is the start of Week 3 - entitled
'Naught for your Comfort in the Shepherds' Fields'. The second part is an appeal from the YMCA-YWCA in East Jerusalem and Beit

towards Bethlehem - and Jerusalem and Nazareth. As ever we want to
encourage the Church in the UK and across the world to remember the 'living
stones' - the people living now in the places whose names we will hear
constantly in carols, readings and prayers. This year we are planning to
provide a weekly reflection from Bethlehem that can be used for thoughts and
prayers as the Advent candle is lit in your church or home. These will be
gathered from our contacts there, and posted here each week of Advent 2003. Download it now in mp3 format (2.8Mb) read more… Jon Rolfe & Clare 28 November 2003 We received the following message from Bishop Riah Abu el Assal in March, as a message for Lent/Easter, and in response to the war in Iraq and the ongoing situation in Israel and Palestine. Bishop in Jerusalem came over to the UK in February for the enthronement of Dr Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury; afterwards, Bishop Riah had time to sit and talk at length with us. We plan to have him as our special guest at the
Amos Day on 4 October, as we know that
whatever else happens this year he will have much to share with us. read more…19 May 2003 When we were putting together our autumn 2002 newsletter, in which this article appears, journalists were once again debating the legitimacy of
Israel's use of F16 bombers to 'target' and kill without trial Palestinians
whom it regards as criminals. Inevitably with such a massive weapon
against an individual, family and neighbours were killed and injured in
the process. Incidents such as this have a considerable impact on the work of Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, which we continue to support. read more…13 September 2002 In response to US President George Bush's speech in June 2002 about what the Palestinian people need to do next, we would like to share a couple of articles with you. On 24 April Bishop Riah happened to be in London, and we were fortunate enough that he found time to join us at 'Wednesdays on the Wall' (the weekly service of prayer and reflection held at All Hallows on the Wall), which was very special for all those of us who were there that evening. read more…25 April 2002 In the middle of the Israeli army's incursion into Bethlehem in April 2002, we received this message from Rev Mitri Raheb on 19 April. Mitri is a good friend of Amos, and is the pastor of the Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem. As he indicates, even his church compound was not immune from the destruction raging in the West Bank at that time. read more…25 April 2002 We often receive requests from people wanting to know how they can respond to the current situation in the West Bank, so we have put together a list of people to lobby or otherwise contact - this list covers politicians and church leaders, both in the UK and overseas, and we hope you find it helpful. read more…17 April 2002 Before Christmas, we gave details of the march to take place on 31 December from Bethlehem to Jerusalem, led by Mgr Michel Sabbah. Amos supporter Andrew Ashdown went out on a flying visit (3 days!) to take part in that march, as well as spending time in Ramallah, Beit Sahour and Beit Jala.
