As I write this I'm on the Holy Ground Tour, focusing on India and Palestine/Israel, within the context of both recognising the wonder and beauty of God's world and of learning from forgotten holy communities about how to live. I love the November tours, meeting so many Amos supporters, chatting about the issues and keeping in touch. We are like a Christmas market on tour with all the olive wood from Beit Sahour, Wi'am embroidery, Christmas cards, Daniel Bonnell prints, books and CDs! But people's response is tremendous and it means we can support some of our partners in a very practical way. read more… 16 December 2005 First, a word of reassurance. Although the Amos office is very close to Liverpool Street station, one of the Underground stations caught up in the bombings yesterday, none of the Amos staff were involved, and (as far as we are aware) no-one we know was involved either. We keep referring to the relationships between Amos staff, supporters, and partners as being 'a family', and we have seldom been as aware of that family as we were yesterday - and we would like to say a very big thank you to everyone. read more…8 July 2005 In February, Garth finally managed to do the long-awaited (and several times postponed!) concert tour of Palestine-Israel. Here, he offers his thoughts on the concerts and the more general situation. read more…11 May 2005 Over the next year or so, we will be reissuing the four CDs which make up the "Journeys with Garth Hewitt" series. "Journeys - the Holy Land" and "Journeys - Latin America" are now available, and the others will follow in due course. read more…31 October 2004 The theme of 2004's Greenbelt Festival was 'Freedom Bound'. As part of the opening ceremony, Garth Hewitt was asked to adapt Martin Luther King's famous speech to incorporate some of the themes and ideas which would be discussed at the Festival. The piece was very well-received, and following requests to make it available, here it is. read more…15 September 2004 For most of July 2004, St Paul's Cathedral hosted an exhibition of the paintings by Daniel Bonnell which appear in the book read more…6 August 2004 On 14 January 2004 Oona King MP (Bethnal Green & Bow), who last year visited Palestine/Israel with Christian Aid, launched Garth Hewitt's new book 'Towards the Dawn' at Church House, Westminster. The book takes the reader on a journey through the Church's year from Easter to Trinity, and also geographically from Jerusalem through Bethlehem to Nazareth and Galilee. It tells the story of the current situation through the voices of the Christian Church, and through peacemakers from all communities, whether Jewish, Christian or Muslim. read more…16 January 2004 Our fourth Advent reflection has two parts. The first is an extract from
Garth Hewitt's book 'Towards the Dawn' (SPCK, published January 2004). The book has weekly
reflections (actually for use in the season from Easter to Trinity so we are
a bit ahead of ourselves), and this is the start of Week 3 - entitled
'Naught for your Comfort in the Shepherds' Fields'. The second part is an appeal from the YMCA-YWCA in East Jerusalem and Beit
Sahour. The YMCA-YWCA is a partner of Christian Aid, and many Amos supporters have
visited both the East Jerusalem branch and the centre in Beit Sahour on Amos
trips. read more…19 December 2003 Our third Advent reflection comes from our good friend Zoughbi Zoughbi, of the Wi'am Conflict Resolution Centre in Bethlehem. Many people have met Zoughbi through visiting Bethlehem, or when he has joined us on two ©ollective weekends (2000 and 2002) and the Greenbelt Festival (2003) here in the UK. If you would like details on how to support Wi'am, including their work with children who are traumatised by current events in Bethlehem, and showing thesort of fear and distress which Zoughbi describes in this piece, do contact the Amos Trust office. read more… 12 December 2003 Our second reflection for Advent, which we hope you can use in any Advent
celebrations in which you are involved, consists of two pieces. The first
is a short reflection from our good friend Wisam Salsaa, and the second piece is a
letter from Revd. Alex Awad (who works at Bethlehem Bible College) to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. It sets the
scene, describing the ongoing suffering in Bethlehem. read more…5 December 2003 As we enter Advent, and prepare for Christmas, we turn our eyes once again
towards Bethlehem - and Jerusalem and Nazareth. As ever we want to
encourage the Church in the UK and across the world to remember the 'living
stones' - the people living now in the places whose names we will hear
constantly in carols, readings and prayers. This year we are planning to
provide a weekly reflection from Bethlehem that can be used for thoughts and
prayers as the Advent candle is lit in your church or home. These will be
gathered from our contacts there, and posted here each week of Advent 2003. Download it now in mp3 format (2.8Mb) read more… Jon Rolfe & Clare 28 November 2003 This is a song which Garth Hewitt has written in the light of the ongoing international situation - he started writing it on a demonstration in 2002, and it reflects the call for an even-handed approach to justice, and the need to seek solutions without recourse to violence.
