Andile doesn’t know his father and his mother is a penniless alcoholic. He’s in touch with her but couldn’t live with her. So he and his older brother live on the streets. His story is not unusual, but there is one big difference: Andile is captain of the Durban All Stars football team and is hoping to lead his team to glory in the SCWC!
Andile takes his role seriously, keeping the team’s morale up at all times – not always easy when your team are experiencing the brutal daily reality of life on the streets. Tom even told us how, recently, he had seen Andile helping an elderly person do their shopping. It seems that, despite views to the contrary, the spirit of Ubunto (‘a person is a person through their relations with other persons’) is alive and well amongst the children of the streets.
Andile and the rest of the Durban All Stars are really excited about the Street Child World Cup. They see it as their chance to show people their potential, to meet with other street children just like them from all around the world, to tell their stories, and to launch a campaign that will benefit street children worldwide.
