Amos's partner in South Africa, Umthombo Street Children are delighted to announce that they have recently begun working with under 7s in the rubbish dumps of East London, Durban. Umthombo is now running the early childhood centre at Second Creek, which works with 70 children a day ranging from newborn to 7 years, (the year children start primary school in South Africa).
The Centre targets children who would otherwise be on the dump all day and exposed to violence, disease and hunger, and aims to ensure that these children do not grow up to be street children. Each day the team provides care for these children, as well as breakfast, lunch and late afternoon snack before the children go home. The Centre runs a nutrition and healthcare programme as most of the children are HIV positive.
Staff were delighted when in January, four children graduated from the programme and went onto primary school. The whole team and centre were proud that these children in their new uniforms. The centre continues to support these children by providing after school care, with homework supervision, as well as washing and ironing their uniforms.
