A powerful act of resistance

Since 2011, Amos Trust has rebuilt Palestinian homes destroyed by the Israeli Defence Force in the West Bank. It is more than construction — it is solidarity made visible. Every home rebuilt is an act of resistance against displacement, a refusal to let families be erased from their land.

Until October 2023, the home rebuilds were undertaken by a dedicated group of UK volunteers who worked with local skilled builders to reconstruct these homes. The situation in the West Bank has deteriorated dramatically since then, making it impossible to safely continue having UK volunteers involved. But the need hasn’t disappeared — if anything, it’s grown more urgent — and our support for home rebuilds continues.

Why homes are demolished

These homes stand on land owned by Palestinians — either in areas annexed by Israel in 1967 to form ‘Greater Jerusalem’ or in Area C, which represents over 60% of the West Bank and comes under full Israeli control through the Oslo Accords.

In both areas, it’s almost impossible for Palestinians to build on their own land. Israel refuses over 98% of Palestinian building permit applications. Families have no choice but to build without permission — then face demolition.

Meanwhile, Israel continues expanding settlements across the West Bank. Since 1967, Israel has authorised settlement housing for over 750,000 Jewish Israelis in the West Bank and East Jerusalem — a clear breach of international law.

Israel justifies demolishing Palestinian homes by claiming lack of permits or “security threats.” The reality is different. Home demolitions clear the way for Israel’s matrix of control — the settlements, bypass roads, the Separation Wall. They send a message: this land is wanted without its Indigenous Palestinian population.

The human cost

Statistics don’t capture what it means to watch soldiers and bulldozers destroy your home in the middle of the night.

“Our house was demolished on 4 September 2018. It was not just the demolition of a house built with stones, but the demolition of every hope and dream built with every stone. Nothing is harder than being here and not being able to do anything — to see 400 soldiers and three bulldozers demolishing your home in the middle of the night without any reason. Nothing is harder than that.” Lolo, whose home was rebuilt by Amos Trust and Holy Land Trust in 2019

The greatest impact is on the families whose homes are destroyed and the thousands of others who’ve been served demolition orders — living with the constant threat that everything they've built could be taken away.

What we built

Over 10 years, more than 100 Amos volunteers raised funds and travelled to the West Bank to provide labour for home rebuilds. They worked alongside local builders and were warmly welcomed by communities. Six families got their homes back.

It wasn’t taken lightly. Volunteers heard families’ stories and brought them back to share. Many were inspired to give more, to lobby their MPs, to speak out when other homes were threatened.

Today we continue to rebuild homes with our partners Holy Land Trust and HIRN. They work closely with local communities to identify families who most need this support and who (with the right legal and financial support) may be able to successfully rebuild their home.

“When I saw the new house, I thought that's my home, just like a dream. Beautiful.”
Lolo

The future

We remain committed to rebuilding Palestinian homes and creating facts on the ground — even when there are so many barriers, even when the costs can be so high.

When conditions allow, we hope to bring UK volunteers back to rebuild Palestinian homes in solidarity with local communities. If you would like to stay informed about when the Home Rebuild Programme resumes, please join our mailing list or email us at [email protected].
