Amos Health and Hope (we are rather proud of the name) is a new programme set up by Laura and David Parajon in 2010. The programme aims to establish health promotion clinics in isolated rural communities and train health promoters to work in these clinics. Laura writes
"It is a very exciting time for us because these new health promoters will be agents of change in their communities to work together with their health committees (there are six members of the health committee from each sector of the community) to collectively improve health and well being.
"They will start by collecting a census in their communities to make sure every person is counted. With the census, we ensure that the most vulnerable people - children under the ages of five years old, newborns, pregnant women, anyone with a disability, anyone with chronic illnesses - are counted, and that they are put on the priority list for home visitations and follow up for health problems. The health promoters will also be sharing with people how to prevent disease and promote health - simple measures such as chlorinating the water and washing your hands in the rural areas can make a big difference in the lives of children.
"They will be equipped with a small pharmacy of medicines to treat the most common illnesses that affect people in their communities.
"In the schools, the health promoters will be working with teachers to do health promotion such as hand washing and teaching tooth brushing in the communities.
"Access to health care will be greatly increased in these rural areas where children often die of completely preventable diseases, and so there are many opportunities to serve so many people in such desperate need for health care.
"We would like to send a special message of thanks to all those who gave so generously in memory of Bryan Christian and for helping to make possible the improved health of many women and children in the rural communities of Nicaragua. People who otherwise would not have received any health care will now have a basic community health program in their communities and the ambulance necessary to make this happen.
"We want you to now for certain that his heart of serving others lives on in the many health promoters in remote communities who will be serving with great love."
