Cycling Under Siege in Gaza: Film screening and discussion
Thursday 19th November 2020
We were delighted to screen Cycling Under Siege in Gaza followed by a Q&A with director Flavia Cappellini and the film’s subject, Alaa al-Dali.
Alaa’s story is one of extraordinary resilience. A member of Gaza’s national cycling team, he lost his leg after being shot by an Israeli sniper during the Great March of Return protests in 2018. Rather than giving up on his dreams, he learned to cycle again with a prosthetic leg and continued to train and compete.
The film captures what it means to pursue sporting dreams under siege, where even the simple act of cycling becomes an act of defiance. It explores determination, loss and the refusal to be defined by what occupation takes from you.
We were joined by Issam Adwan, project manager of We Are Not Numbers in Gaza, cyclist and author Julian Sayarer, and writer and playwright Ahmed Masoud for a powerful conversation about sport, resistance and life under blockade.
