S5, E3: What is the Legacy of Archbishop Desmond Tutu in South Africa today?
What is the legacy of Archbishop Desmond Tutu in South Africa today?
With Rev Solomuzi Mabuza, Mpendulo Nyembe and Nomabelu Mvambo-Dandala
Tuesday 1st February 2022
For this special webinar live from Durban in South Africa, Amos Director Chris Rose was joined by three remarkable voices to pay tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who had died just weeks earlier in December 2021.
Archbishop Tutu was a towering figure in the struggle against apartheid, using his moral authority and prophetic voice to challenge injustice and demand equality. After apartheid ended, he chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, pioneering restorative justice and national healing. His legacy extends far beyond South Africa — inspiring movements for justice worldwide, including Palestinian solidarity, where he was an outspoken critic of Israeli apartheid.
Rev Solomuzi Mabuza, Minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa, Mpendulo Nyembe, Director of uMthombo Street Children, and Nomabelu Mvambo-Dandala, former Director of Diakonia Council of Churches, each shared personal reflections on what Archbishop Tutu meant to them and discussed his enduring legacy in South Africa today.
Our guests:
- Rev Solomuzi Mabuza: Minister, Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa
- Mpendulo Nyembe: Director, uMthombo Street Children
- Nomabelu Mvambo-Dandala: Former Director, Diakonia Council of Churches
- Chris Rose: Amos Trust Director (host)
