Diwali Dinners 2019

October 2019
Sunday 27th October is Diwali and we are asking Amos supporters to celebrate by hosting an Indian meal to raise awareness and vital funds for Karunalaya, our On Her Terms partner in India — to support their work with children and young people who are living and working on the streets.

About Karunalaya
Based in Chennai, India Karunalaya’s work seeks to ensure that the legal rights of children on the streets, pavement-dwellers, and marginalised local communities, are realised.

Since 1995, Karunalaya has grown from a small soup kitchen to a large organisation that runs an enormous range of projects and services to champion the rights of many of the most marginalised women and children in Chennai, India.

The central pillars of their programme are providing shelter, food, healthcare, as well as offering counselling, street-based education and arts, sports programmes, vocational training and family reintegration work.

Where will your money go?
Here is what the money you raise at your Diwali Dinner could do:

  • £150 supports a 6-week theatre and storytelling programme where young people explore an issue affecting them then create and perform a play to their community using theatre of the oppressed techniques to raise awareness of the abuse and challenges they face.

  • £360 could support a girl to stay in the girls’ shelter for a year, including food, healthcare and the individual psychosocial support she needs to address the trauma she has experienced at home or on the streets.

  • £500 could support raising awareness in the different communities that Karunalaya works in about the impact of child marriage and the benefit of keeping daughters in full-time education.

  • £1000 could support an advocacy worker’s salary to help push forward change for children on the streets and get young people’s demands to policymakers and officials

Your Diwali Dinner
You could host a party for 8-10 people, a big ‘bring and share meal at your local church, place of worship or community hall, or simply sharing some Indian style sweet treats at work. The important thing is to have fun and to tell people about the work of Karunalaya — our Street Justice partner in India.
