Gaza: How can we be healthy?
Thursday 25th June 2020
Most young people in Gaza live with permanent traumatic stress — the innocent victims of multiple wars, unable to leave the massively overcrowded confines of Gaza, and with little hope for the future. By June 2020, the threat of coronavirus added another layer of crisis to an already desperate situation.
DSPR (the Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees, run by the Near East Council of Churches) has worked in Gaza for decades, providing psychosocial support, trauma counselling and safe spaces for young people trying to build lives under siege and blockade.
Lubna Sabbah from DSPR in Gaza City shares the latest news on how the pandemic was affecting young people already carrying immense psychological burdens. She discusses how DSPR journeys with these young people as they find ways to cope, heal and hold onto hope in one of the world's most difficult places to live.
Consultant Dr Bassam Abu Hamad brings clinical expertise on the mental health impacts of living under siege.
