The long legacy of colonisation

For episode two of Amos@6 we were joined by Dieudonné Nahimana from New Generation in Burundi and Mpendulo Nyembe from uMthombo in South Africa to discuss the legacy of colonisation in their countries.

Colonisation didn’t end with independence. Its structures persist in economic systems, aid models, power dynamics and the ways organisations in the Global North partner with those in the Global South. These legacies affect not just societies but the daily work of grassroots organisations trying to create change.

Dieudonné and Mpendulo explore how colonisation continues to shape their lives and work, and what true solidarity looks like. They challenge us to examine our own roles as partners and friends of organisations in the Global South, asking what it means to work together in ways that genuinely dismantle colonial structures rather than reinforce them.

Our guests:

  • Dieudonné Nahimana: New Generation, Burundi
  • Mpendulo Nyembe: uMthombo, South Africa
