S2, E5: The power of cultural resistance
The power of cultural resistance
Thursday 22nd October 2020
Why is cultural resistance so important? What does it look like in practice and why is Amos Trust so deeply committed to it?
Cultural resistance is the act of using art, music, theatre, food and creativity as tools of defiance and survival. When voices are silenced, when communities are erased, when occupation tries to erase identity — culture becomes resistance. It asserts presence, preserves memory and refuses erasure.
Ruth Daniel from In Place of War (pictured) brings global perspective on how artists and communities use creativity to resist violence, build solidarity and reclaim narrative in conflict zones. Wisam Salsaa from the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem shares insights from working at the intersection of art, tourism and occupation in Palestine, where culture is both celebration and political act.
Together, they explore what cultural resistance means, how it works in practice and why supporting it matters.
