S3, E5: Girlhood – book launch
Girlhood: Book launch
Thursday 25th February 2021
What does a teenage girl dream about in Nigeria or New York? How does she spend her days in Mongolia, the Midwest and the Middle East?
We were joined by author Masuma Ahuja to celebrate the launch of her book Girlhood, where 30 teenage girls from 27 countries shared their own stories of growing up through diary entries and photographs. The book offered an intimate, unfiltered look at girlhood across cultures — the universal and the particular, the struggles and joys that connect and distinguish teenage girls’ experiences around the world.
In conversation with Karin Joseph from Amos Trust, Masuma discussed the power of giving girls platforms to tell their own stories, why representation matters and what she learned from listening to these diverse voices. At a time when girls’ voices are too often filtered through others, Girlhood put them at the centre.
